the governor and the mayor weren't shining examples of, you know, state control over that situation. so there was enough blame and mistake-prone action to look at and learn from, and obama is nothing if not a quick study in that regard and understanding and appreciating how to use the tools of this government at a time of crisis. now, we'll see. the expectation for the president is to do his job and to be on top of doing his job. so politically i don't know if there's a huge upside -- there's more of a downside risk than anything if there's a gaffe somewhere, if there's a mistake somewhere in the execution of responding to those in need, but i think this president has shown that his administration will be prepared for that because that's what people expect. >> karen, i was watching your facial expressions there and they were quite perfect. perhaps you'd like to put words to them. >> well, you know, nice try, michael. i mean, let's remember that in terms -- the october surprise in 2008 we saw a real sharp contrast between john mccain and president obama, and i think people, you know,

it's easier from a political perspective from president obama because he goes about the duties of being president hp he called chris christie, mike bloomberg, cory booker, governor cuomo making sure he knows everything going on the ground, making sure federal assistance gets where it's needed. it's much harder for mitt romney in that he can't really campaign and yet, he doesn't want to totally disappear and crede the last five days of television coverage. it's still the president of the united states acting like the president of the united states. it's when -- it's how you get into situations like we saw in ohio today. i don't -- i don't question the motives. i think in a short period of time what mitt romney was trying to do is how can we thread this very fine line. so i sort of understand in that way. it's just difficult because when you get this close to an election, andrea, six days, everything is with politics. everything. that's what the hard thing that mitt romney is trying to do, how do you take advantage or at least stay in the conversation, with six days left without appearing

today president obama is scheduling to arrive in atlantic city to survey the damage alongside governor chris christie. this morning the associated press reports the storm killed at least 50 people. there are more than 8.2 million households still without power across 17 states. and many of the outages could last beyond election day. between damage to property and the economy, the total impact expected to reach a staggering $50 billion. the damage is perhaps nowhere worse than the coastline of new jersey where sandy came ashore laying waste to an amusement park and historic boardwalk at seaside heights. as for the airports, jfk, newark, they're expected to resume limited service this morning. the same cannot be said for laguardia. jetblue posted these photos of the runways submerged. more than 18,000 flights have already been canceled as a result of sandy. and police had to take to the air to save victims from rooftops in staten island after floodwaters surrounded their homes. they were loaded one by one into baskets before being hoisted to safety. now let's go to breezy point. a neighb
